The gentle revolution of Fucina Frammenti: Design, Sustainability, Sharing

T he story of Fucina Frammenti, a young design brand based in Murano Venice, is one that deserves to be told. Born from an intuition of Clara Accebbi, one of the founders and a designer trained at the IUAV in Venice, Fucina Frammenti aims to give new life to the “noble” waste materials of Murano furnaces through design.

At the origins of an innovative idea

We asked ourselves: “what if we tried to create starting from what others consider waste?” This is how Clara recounts the spark that gave birth to Fucina Frammenti in 2019, an idea that matured during her thesis and was shared with a group of fellow designers. Together, they began to explore the potential of glass residues, including “galotte,” which are the end parts of blown pieces that are detached and usually discarded.

The Noble Waste Mix philosophy

From here, the philosophy of “Noble Waste Mix” takes shape, which is based on four ingredients: research, noble waste material, energy impact, and positive supply chain. “The ideal goal is to arrive at 100% recovered products, starting from waste with an intrinsic value, which are reinterpreted without high-impact processes,” explains Clara. To minimize energy expenditure, in fact, Fucina Frammenti tries not to use hot transformation processes: for example, Murano glass is not remelted, but they start from already formed pieces using cold working techniques.

A creative process outside the box

The creative process of Fucina Frammenti is based precisely on the constraints given by the recovered materials. “Working with a predefined shape forces you to think outside the box, to find new solutions,” says Clara. The team constantly compares notes, in a process of contamination between different perspectives and skills. Brainstorming, drawings, prototypes: each project is an open path, where function guides form and every detail is designed to reduce impact.

Paris 142: a lamp born from a Galotta

A concrete example is the table lamp from the Parigi 142 collection, born from the recovery of a galotta. The challenge was to integrate a light source into an already given glass shape without distorting it. Available in two versions, a limited edition in orange and one in deep blue, this table lamp has a dimmable diffused light that creates a cozy atmosphere.

A virtuous supply chain with the Murano furnaces

Behind every Fucina Frammenti creation is a continuous dialogue with various interlocutors, including the Murano furnaces. The noble waste materials can come from different stages of the production process, from the initial activity to the rigorous quality tests that often penalize products with minimal imperfections. Galotte, shards, and much more, in the hands of Fucina Frammenti become new resources. “The dream is to trigger a virtuous supply chain, where recovery becomes an integral part of the process,” confides Clara.

A Material Library for designers: the future is sharing

To fuel this vision, Fucina Frammenti is about to launch a new project: a shared materials library with selected external designers. In a special box, they will find different types of Noble Waste – glass, marble, screen printing – accompanied by a brief. The invitation is to let yourself be inspired by these “noble waste” to imagine new sustainable projects. A way to expand the network and circulate virtuous ideas and solutions.

A community of designers for a sustainable future

At its core, this is the heart of Fucina Frammenti: connecting people and creating a community around a new way of doing design. “Change starts from many small actions. We believe in it and want to involve designers, companies, customers in this journey” , concludes Clara with her contagious enthusiasm. Because even a waste material, with the right perspective, can become the beginning of a beautiful story.
