Andrea Zanetti: a young talent in Murano’s Glass Art

Andrea Zanetti represents the new generation of glassmaking artisans, carrying forward a family tradition rich in history and innovation. Born and raised on the island, Andrea has breathed the art of glass since childhood, following in the footsteps of his father Oscar and grandfather Licio. Today, Andrea leads Fornace Zanetti Murano Srl, where he continues to perfect his art and contribute to innovation in the field of Murano glass.

A legacy of excellence and generational transition

The Zanetti family’s history in the world of glass dates back to the 19th century, when one of their ancestors, Abbot Zanetti, founded the Glass Museum and opened the Murano Glass School. Andrea’s grandfather, Licio Zanetti, distinguished himself for the artistic quality of his glass sculptures, elevating the family furnace to one of the most prestigious in Murano. Oscar Zanetti, Andrea’s father, inherited this artistic talent, expressing it through both ancient and innovative techniques.

In 2010, there was a significant generational shift when the ownership and management of Zanetti passed to Andrea Zanetti and Damian Farnea, sons of the two previous partners. This change marked the beginning of a new era for the company, while maintaining strong ties to tradition.

Forged by two fires

Andrea has the privilege of working alongside two great masters: his father Oscar Zanetti and Afro Celotto.. These two mentors, specialized in very different Murano techniques, offer Andrea a unique and comprehensive perspective on the art of glassmaking. Following this illustrious tradition and benefiting from this exceptional guidance, Andrea spent his entire youth observing and learning in the furnace.

In 2014, his hard work was rewarded with the prestigious Murano Prize for an abstract work created in collaboration with designer Patrick Berger. When asked about his journey, Andrea responds with humility: “Master, in quotes, is something you become when you’re old.” This statement underlines his awareness of how long the road is to achieve full mastery in this art. Andrea emphasizes that in the world of glass, “you never finish learning” highlighting the continuously evolving nature of this art.

Techniques and Innovations: Andrea’s Trademark

Andrea has specialized in various techniques, but chalcedony has become his distinctive signature. Chalcedony, more than just a simple color, is a particular glass composition that the Zanetti family has been using for over 30 years to create unique sculptures. This technique, perfected over time, gives Andrea’s works an unmistakable character.

In addition to chalcedony, Andrea excels in sculpture and solid glass work, constantly expanding his repertoire of techniques and styles. Despite deep respect for tradition, Andrea and his team are always looking to the future. “We are always searching for new things” he explains. This approach is reflected in their willingness to experiment with new techniques and materials, adapting to the challenges of the modern market.

Andrea speaks enthusiastically about collaborations with other artists, such as Hugh Findletar, which have enriched his repertoire and artistic vision. These experiences have allowed Andrea to explore new styles and techniques, such as the “Flowerheads” colorful busts in African style.

Challenges and future perspectives

The young artisan is aware of the challenges the sector is facing. “As soon as something particular happens in the world, we feel it immediately” he says, referring to market sensitivity. However, Andrea and his team have demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt, modifying their techniques and materials to remain competitive.

Despite the challenges, Andrea looks to the future with optimism. His ability to blend tradition and innovation, combined with the deep technical knowledge inherited from his family and refined under the guidance of exceptional masters, positions him as one of Murano’s promising young talents. With each piece he creates, Andrea not only honors the tradition of his family and the island but also contributes to shaping the future of Murano’s glass art, guiding Fornace Zanetti Murano Srl towards new horizons of artistic excellence.
